Blog: Next New

A new type of new media would be a dive system or virtual realty system that allows users to engage into specific categories of their choice such as debates, news conferences, and lectures. Similar to virtual gaming but this type of new media is more interactive for the mentioned categories where participants may engage in the conversation or  listening in to a debate or news. Questions and responses are in real time so all concerns will be addressed and of course each category will have a limitation on participants depending on the event or size of host. Virtual lectures will not only allow professors and students to be closer but they can transport virtually anywhere in the world for first hand experiences. Students can learn about the different geography, elements, and lifeforms in the world without having to worry about harm to the staff or students. I believe this is greatly beneficial to the educational system and hopefully it could be implemented soon.

Blog: Wiki so Far

I have started contributing to the automotive sector in our class Wiki. I will be editing the brand Mercedes Benz and I will be adding more of the history behind the brand. I began with the origination of the Mercedes Star and I will continue on to describing specific models and the evolution of these models. However, if I do not post about specific models I will continue to discuss about the history of Mercedes and where the current vehicles derived from. Still pondering about what I should focus on because certain topics like the specific model's itself, have less content unless I go into detail about each feature. Feel free to leave a comment or idea!

Blog: P2P

P2P is an acronym for peer-to-peer and it is a way of sharing files within a network of computers that share a similar network without the need of a central server. P2P programs like BitTorrent allows users to upload or receive and share large amount of data or files instantly and simultaneously. With the capability of sharing massive amount of data within a practically private network, it poses a threat to online privacy and can be difficult to stop because once it has been shared, it may be accessed somewhere else. In the article "The BitTorrent Effect" by Clive Thompson, BitTorrent is one of the most successful P2P programs and accounts for more than 1/3 of the data being shared through the net. Creator Bram Cohen had a vision for BitTorrent as a program that allowed computer programmers to share software but it has become a network for illegal trafficking of music and movies. This eventually leads to question of how can we really control the content that flows through the internet without infringing peoples right. Can we trust people to act ethically?

Blog: Privacy

Privacy issues are related to New Media because data and information of users are so accessible nowadays. Regardless of the security in place it seems as though hackers always seems to find a way to gain access to the data of big corporations. In addition, often found in fine print corporations often state that by agreeing with the privacy disclosure, it allows them to store your information or market it which often gets intercepted somewhere in the process.

Blog: Advice

Being newly hired by Baruch College to improve New Media, I will suggest in cooperating more advanced interactive websites like wix.com or websites that allows the user to build and construct a more personal website whether its for business or fun. As an alternative i would suggest teaching students about the basics of programming or basics to coding which is in demand in our current job market. I would like kids to learn about the back end of our social media websites and focus more of history of New Media in earlier courses.

Creativity and New Media

My Wedding Website

New media allowed new methods of sharing important events such as an interactive platform allowing guest to view, RSVP, and receive updates. It allows users to view any updates instantly rather than waiting for a paper invitation.

HW Creativity

Create a new post on your blog with the above title. In your post, cite at least one of the assigned readings and discuss how new media fosters creativity.

New media fosters creativity by providing access to all users online. With practically unlimited access to wide range of contents creators may be inspired by the ideas of a particular audience, the distribution of their works might bypass gatekeepers, and the audience may use these works in their own creations (Isaac Bell, 3). Users have access to unlimited resources for fueling creativity allowing people to fact check every detail for false content and with so many media outlets available today, people can share and spread their content within a matter of seconds. Open content also allows for critique and criticism by the viewers which in return, allows the user to receive feedback for improvement and advancing their current content, pushing their boundaries beyond their comfort zone. New media has changed the way people share information, with its ease of access, immediacy, and ability to preserve even trivial interactions, offers a different way to study creativity and audiences (Isaac Bell, 19).

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used in gaming and architect which can help stimulate creativity. Games like Minecraft can help kids create a new virtual world that they envision but a downside is the time spent in the game rather than learning about turning that vision into reality. For architects, virtual prints of buildings help professions turn their visions into reality by outlining the details of their blueprint before it is constructed. In the article "The Virtual World Moves into the Classroom" by Joe Earle, explains how VR is able to help kids from other countries immerse into another way of life by following refugee families and help professor lecture around the world. Like I stated before about Minecraft, the artciel "After Second Life, Can Virtual World get a Reboot? by Diane Mehta, explains how virtual worlds allow kids to explore their learning radius and creativity.

Blog about Twitter

A Twitter discussion is unrestricted whereas a discussion board and in-class conversation is restricted. They share similarities in ways that allow open discussion and free communication. Both in-class discussions and Twitter allow users to come together to brainstorm.

Social networking sites

Social media has grown popularity over the past few years. Most popular social networking sites include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. When Facebook and Twitter started out, it was a tool used to connect with family, friends, colleagues, etc. It was a platform where people were able to connect and stay in touch with others from different parts of the world, much like MySpace. Facebook allow users to post blogs on their timeline so people may follow and similarly, Instagram and Snapchat provides snip bits of a place and time for people to follow but through photos and videos. Instagram and Facebook allows users to post pictures but later adopted the format to allow users to post videos like Snapchat. Twitter is strictly blogging and lacks the other features of Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram but they are allow users to blog in different ways.

Blog Social Networking

Corporations can use blog social networking as a way of communicating to clients and consumers. Blogging acts as one platform to provide periodic updates to clients and consumers. In the article "Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting" by Frank Langfitt, he explains how blog social networking companies like Linkedin is beneficial to society by providing a common platform focused on job recruiting. Linkedin acts as a social media platform where people can update their educational and professional background to network allowing more exposure. With the upside, there is a downside to these platforms as stated in an article by Hilary Stout, "Antisocial Networking?" People spend most of their time on these social media platforms, that less time are actually spent through physical interactions, especially kids. I believe that this evolving technology might one day lead to full virtual interactions between one another causing people to lose their social abilities.

Blog v Wiki

A blog site is an outlet for news which is more personal allowing the writer to choose their own content. Wikipedia is another outlet for online content which is maintained in an open community by other users. Wikipedia and blogs are similar in that it is accessible for everybody, allowing everyone to access and edit its content. They share the same disadvantageous which is cyber security and the credibility behind some of its content. However, in an article Wikipedia to Limit Changes to Articles on People by Noam Cohen, there is a growing realization on the part of Wikipedia's leaders that as the site grows more influential, they must transform its embrace-the-chaos culture into something more mature and dependable thanks their new flagging feature (Cohen). Both outlets allow open communication from the writer to the readers and some of its biggest risk are also cyber security which is most concerning with the military. There is no limit how how many blogs, videos, and what kind of information is being posted so pentagon officials are policing the outflow as much as they can to review the content that is being published as stated in an article Pentagon Keeps Wary Watch as Troops Blogs by James Dao.

Compare and contrast blogs and wikis. Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world. How can blogs be used for collaboration? Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?
Cite at least 2 readings relating to Blogs and/or Wikis.

Is privacy private?

The topic I chose to discuss about is about the propaganda revolving the 2016 election and how companies like Facebook and Cambridge Analytica handled the data of its users. Have you ever wondered why the ads in your current web page appear to be from your recent searches? Is it coincidental? Or is your data being sold and marketed? To what extent is your privacy actually private? These are the questions that I will be discussing for my project.
